Launch: Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question In partnership with the Institute for Palestine Studies Thursday, June 2nd | 11:00 - 13:00 Location: the Palestinian Museum, Birzeit/ Institute for Palestine Studies (Beirut) and Facebook / Zoom Language: Arabic To mark the seventy-fourth anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, and the fifty-fifth anniversary of the 1967 war, the Encyclopedia will be launched simultaneously at both the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit and the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beirut. About the Encyclopedia: The Encyclopedia is a digital platform developed by the Institute for Palestine Studies in collaboration with the Palestinian Museum. Tracing the history of modern Palestine from the end of the Ottoman era to the present, it is comprised of thousands of texts written specifically for the project by leading academics. The Encyclopedia is intended to be used by academics, students, journalists, and the general public. Importantly, the platform positions Palestinians as actors and initiators, not merely as victims of the Zionist settler-colonial project. The Encyclopedia is available in both Arabic and English. The word count currently stands at 800,000 words in each language, excluding historical documents. Nearly 100 researchers, editors, translators, programmers, and data entry specialists participated in the project. This Encyclopedia is the result of eight years of preparation and several implementation stages, including the interactive timeline of the transitional platform, “Palestinian Journeys”, published in 2018. The Encyclopedia will be continually upgraded by the Institute for Palestine Studies and the Palestinian Museum over the years to come. |
