We invite you to join this panel discussion, which offers an open space for thinking about the position of cultural work today in the context of ongoing genocide, the viability of cultural practice and artistic and knowledge production in times of genocide, and the meanings of life and death and the spaces of survival and steadfastness that exist between them. The discussion addresses the discourse of “reconstruction” within an urgent humanitarian reality, and the place of rebuilding cultural institutions within frameworks of relief and immediate survival. Can we speak of rebuilding cultural institutions while daily life itself is constructed under conditions of survival? And what does it mean to push culture into a deferred or secondary position within emergency discourse, despite its role as a fundamental political and epistemic act in confronting ongoing genocide?
