Soap-Making from Olive Oil
For Families and Children
In partnership with Bank of Palestine and Al’ard Company
Friday, October 31, 12:00 – 17:00
Location: the Palestinian Museum Garden
The olive harvest returns each year, bringing its bounty to farmers and their land. Despite the hardships facing Palestinian farmers, their bond with the olive tree endures, they continue to plant, nurture, and safeguard its yield.
The olive season is accompanied by the tradition of “soap cooking”, using oil preserved from previous years in a craft long emblematic of Palestine. Soap-making flourished before the Nakba and gained worldwide fame, to the point where the name “Nabulsi soap” became synonymous with Palestinian soap wherever it was produced. Despite changes and decline, the craft lives on; preserved by factories, passed down through families, and celebrated each year by grandmothers preparing homemade soap as part of their household provisions.
We invite you to discover more about soap through an exhibition and accompanying activities for both adults and children. What will we do on this day?
- Read the story The Soap That Defeated the King.
- Make soap using different methods.
- Create packaging and stamps.
- Share knowledge and images about soap-making in Palestine.
