Protecting Palestinian Cultural Heritage in Masafer Yatta

This booklet features reflections from the researchers involved in the project Protecting Palestinian Cultural Heritage in Masafer Yatta, showcasing their knowledge and experience.

The project Protecting Palestinian Cultural Heritage in Masafer Yatta has three main aims. Firstly, to archive a collection of video interviews conduct-ed with elderly residents of the threatened Masa-fer Yatta area. Secondly, to develop the capacities of young archivists in the field of digital archiving, and thirdly, to provide access to the newly digi-tized items to audiences and researchers on the platform of the Palestinian Museum Digital Archive (PMDA). The villages of Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, have a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The project aims to shed light on the area, emphasising its integral place in the heritage of Palestine, and encourage the area’s youth to discover and safeguard their cultural heritage.

Masafer Yatta includes 33 Palestinian Khirbah (hamlets) and villages to the southeast of the city of Yatta (26 kilometres to the south of Hebron.) It is one of the many areas threatened with forced displacement, and the methodical erasure of its tangible and intangible cultural heritage by the Israeli Occupation.
